VELFAC glazing has been specified by award-winning property developer and regeneration specialist Urban Splash for its highly innovative hoUSe™ concept. Created by architects shedkm, the first hoUSe™ properties are now being built at the ‘Millennium Community’ of New Islington, Manchester, where Urban Splash is lead developer. hoUSe™ is an alternative to small and uninspiring modern house design, offering family homes based on the ‘traditional’ terrace format but with 25% more living space than the typical new build equivalent, and featuring high ceilings, flexible room layouts and big windows as standard.

Contemporary style plus low energy performance
Windows are an important feature in every hoUSe™, used to emphasise a contemporary architectural style while also contributing towards the low energy, low maintenance performance of each property. By specifying VELFAC composite aluminum / wood glazing, the distinctive exterior facades are enhanced by a window which also delivers exceptional insulation and weather protection. ‘Windows you can stand in’ are a key hoUSe™ feature, with standalone floor to ceiling glazing installed as both a design statement and as a way to increase natural daylight entering the property.

Preventing cold spots while maximising daylight
VELFAC high performance glazing is ideal for innovative concepts such as hoUSe™, as the combination of slim frame design and low U-value construction prevents ‘cold spots’ across the glazed surface, allowing the placement of furniture right up to the glass. The minimal VELFAC frame also maximises natural light entering the interior, further reducing energy needed for artificial lighting.

VELFAC glazing has been installed in the first (number) hoUSe™ properties to be built at New Islington; a further seven homes are in the pipeline, helping transform what was once one of Manchester’s worst housing estates into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood set between two Victorian canals.
